Maria’s 2013 Oscar Nominations Thoughts
Now that the 2013 Oscar Nominations were released, I decided to do my own picks. Mostly for my own enjoyment, but also to give some insight.
The problem is a number of the main contenders (Lincoln, for example), I did not see. I missed Argo – completely on accident – I never wanted to see Lincoln, and Zero Dark Thirty is released tomorrow.
So, in each category I will have who I WANT to win and then who I THINK will win.
Now, also, the ACTUAL winner is italicized.
BEST PICTURE
“Amour”
“Argo” – After seeing the award circuits before the Oscars, I switched from Lincoln to this as my WILL win.
“Beasts of the Southern Wild”
“Django Unchained” – WANT to win. See my review here.
“Les Miserables”
“Life of Pi”
“Lincoln”
“Silver Linings Playbook”
“Zero Dark Thirty”
Best Director:
Ang Lee, “Life of Pi”
Benh Zeitlin, “Beasts of the Southern Wild”
David O. Russell, “Silver Linings Playbook” – WANT to win. But for my prediction, I’m conflicted. I think David deserves it and has a good chance, but I also think Spielberg has a good chance as well. So my 1/2 prediction to win.
Michael Haneke, “Amour”
Steven Spielberg, “Lincoln” – equal 1/2 prediction to win.
****Note: Quentin Tarantino should have been nominated. Just saying. He’d be my want to win if he was.****
Best Actor:
Bradley Cooper, “Silver Linings Playbook”
Daniel Day Lewis, “Lincoln” – WANT to win. WILL win.
Denzel Washington, “Flight”
Hugh Jackman, “Les Miserables”
Joaquin Phoenix, “The Master”
Best Supporting Actor:
Alan Arkin, “Argo”
Christoph Waltz, “Django Unchained” – WANT to win. Prediction that WILL win.
Philip Seymour Hoffman, “The Master”
Robert De Niro, “Silver Linings Playbook”
Tommy Lee Jones, “Lincoln”
Best Actress:
Emmanuelle Riva, “Amour”
Jennifer Lawrence, “Silver Linings Playbook”
Jessica Chastain, “Zero Dark Thirty” – WANT to win. Also is my WILL win prediction.
Naomi Watts, “The Impossible”
Quvenzhané Wallis, “Beasts of the Southern Wild”
Best Supporting Actress:
Amy Adams, “The Master”
Anne Hathaway, “Les Miserables” – WANT to win.
Helen Hunt, “The Sessions”
Jacki Weaver, “Silver Linings Playbook”
Sally Field, “Lincoln” – prediction to WIN
Best Original Screenplay:
“Amour”
“Django Unchained” – WANT to win
“Flight”
“Moonrise Kingdom” – WILL probably win
“Zero Dark Thirty”
Best Adapted Screenplay:
“Argo” – WANT to win. Also has a good chance.
“Beasts of the Southern Wild”
“Life of Pi”
“Lincoln” – My other has a good chance of winning.
“Silver Linings Playbook”
Best Animated Feature:
“Brave” – just putting in here, that I effing hated this movie. See my review here.
“Frankenweenie” – I think this will win, however, I think they might just give it to Tim Burton just because it’s the thing he’s always wanted to make, it’s the short that got him started, and idk.
“Paranorman” – WANT to win. See my review here.
“The Pirates! Band of Misfits”
“Wreck-It Ralph” – see my review here.
Best Foreign Feature:
*Note, I have seen none of these movies*
“Amour” – Since this is nominated for best picture, as well, it probably will win.
“A Royal Affair”
“Kon-Tiki”
“No”
“War Witch”
Best Visual Effects:
“The Avengers” – WANT to win.
“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” – see my review here. I don’t think it should win, but it might, just because of the whole HFR thing.
“Life of Pi” – Also has a good chance of winning, because it was a gorgeous movie.
“Prometheus” – see my review here.
“Snow White and the Huntsman” – I almost laughed that this is even nominated for anything. See my review here.
Best Cinematography:
****Note: I am 100% ok with anything in this category winning except Life of Pi, so I don’t care. I obviously would prefer Django to win, just because I love Tarantino, and some shots I was just blown away by how pretty they were – but I don’t care what wins. ****
“Anna Karenina” – the way they shot this was pretty cool. See here (towards the bottom of the page).
“Django Unchained”
“Life of Pi” – I don’t think this one will win, just because a lot is CGI. It’s unfair if it wins then. I’m totally fine with it getting Visual Effects, but cinematography should go to something with much more camera work.
“Lincoln”
“Skyfall”
Best Costume Design:
“Anna Karenina” – WANT to win, see the costume feature towards the bottom of this page. I think this and Les Mis has equal chances to win.
“Les Miserables” – equal chance with Anna Karenina to win.
“Lincoln”
“Mirror Mirror”
“Snow White and the Huntsman”
Best Documentary Feature:
****Note: I have seen none of these, so I have no idea. I’m not a documentary person****
“5 Broken Cameras”
“The Gatekeepers”
“How to Survive a Plague”
“The Invisible War”
“Searching for Sugar Man”
Best Documentary Short:
*Same note as above*
“Inocente”
“Kings Point”
“Mondays at Racine”
“Open Heart”
“Redemption”
“Snow White and the Huntsman”
Best Film Editing:
“Argo” – WANT to win.
“Life of Pi”
“Lincoln”
“Silver Linings Playbook”
“Zero Dark Thirty”
Best Makeup and Hairstyling:
“Hitchcock”
“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” – If this wins, seriously, ugh. I mean, I know it took a lot of makeup to make all those normal sized men look like dwarfs… but please no. No. You had three successful movies to practice this makeup on, so I don’t think you should get it.
“Les Miserables” – WANT to win and probably will win.
Best Music (Original Score):
****Note: I have seen none of these, except Skyfall, so don’t feel good enough to judge****
“Anna Karenina”
“Argo”
“Life of Pi”
“Lincoln”
“Skyfall”
Best Music (Original Song):
“Before My Time” from “Chasing Ice”
“Everybody Needs A Best Friend” from “Ted”
“Pi’s Lullaby” from “Life of Pi”
“Skyfall” from “Skyfall” – WANT to win. Hopefully and probably will win.
“Suddenly” from “Les Misérables” – Why did you add an original song to an already good musical? You should lose just for that.
Best Production Design:
“Anna Karenina” – WANT to win. It should win. I think it has equal chance of winning with Les Mis.
“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”
“Les Misérables” – Equal chance to win with Anna Karenina
“Life of Pi”
“Lincoln”
Best Short Film, Animated:
*I’ve only seen one of these, and am afraid it will win since I’m about the only person that hated it….*
“Adam and Dog”
“Fresh Guacamole”
“Head over Heels”
“Maggie Simpson in ‘The Longest Daycare'”
“Paperman” – There is a review of this one, in the Wreck-It Ralph review here. In short, I hated it.
Best Short Film, Live Action:
*Haven’t seen any of these*
“Asad”
“Buzkashi Boys”
“Curfew”
“Death of a Shadow (Dood van een Schaduw)”
“Henry”
Best Sound Editing:
“Argo”
“Django Unchained” – WANT to win. And I honestly think should and has a good chance to win.
“Life of Pi”
“Skyfall” (tie)
“Zero Dark Thirty” (tie)
Best Sound Mixing:
“Argo”
“Les Misérables” – WANT to win. But is it really fair for a musical to win? It has to be good at music! So I’m slightly conflicted with myself.
“Life of Pi”
“Lincoln”
“Skyfall” – Might win.
