Review – Kick-Ass 2

Part 1 – Spoiler Free Quickie Review

This movie follows characters that we met in the first Kick-Ass, such as Kick-Ass himself, and the fabulous Hit-Girl, as well as Red Mist rediscovering himself.  But we also meet some new hilarious/interesting characters.  The most interesting characters in this film, are the villains.  The entire movie is just mediocre with one good fight scene at the end.  Chloe Grace Moretz plays Hit-Girl and she’s the star of the movie.  She really carries the movie because she’s funny, pretty, and awesome. You really see her trying to do the best she can to please Marcus (Morris Chestnut), her guardian, but being conflicted with wanting to be Hit-Girl again.  Kick-Ass is there, but you don’t ever really care what happens to him because he’s just such a blah character.  The members of the Justice Forever are alright. This is one comic-movie that I’m not familiar with the comics, so I’m letting that go since I have no knowledge of them.  I wouldn’t be a good judge of comic to movie.  But they didn’t really do anything to make me want to care about any of the members.

The villains, like I said, are awesome.  One character, Mother Russia, is played by Olga Kurkulina, a Ukrainian body builder.  Let me tell you, she is AMAZING to watch. Why? Her body.  Of course it’s awesome, she’s a professional body builder.  But dang, her character is awesome, her body is awesome, and you just loved every scene she was in.  The villains also get REAL bad in this one, with Christopher Mintz-Plasse’s character taking this a bit far, while being idiotic as ever.

The movie was alright – and would have a higher rating than the 5.5 I gave it, but for the fact that it resorts to a couple of cheap jokes.  As in, there’s a scene with three people projectile vomiting/pooping.  It was unnecessary.  They could have done the scene in a MUCH better way and it would have had a MUCH better rating.  I was just ashamed that it had to use such a huge cop out like throw up and poop jokes.  It didn’t need to use them. I felt like I was watching Jackass instead of Kick-Ass.  Other than that, the plot is predictable and nothing new.  There are a few fight scenes but definitely not enough to keep you satisfied, and although the “final” fight is pretty decent, it’s not long enough.  The movie just needed MORE development.  Less predictable plot, more going into the characters, less crappy (ha) jokes, more fight scenes, and more on the heros/villains.

 

Part 2 – In Depth Spoiler Ridden Review/Synopsis

The clear loser of this movie, or victim – are Dads.  Dads lose in so many ways in this movie.  We have the ever obvious father of Hit-Girl, who we all know was insane, but is now dead.  His shadow looms over Hit-Girl in everything she does.  Now, she is trying to please Marcus, his long time partner and best friend.  Marcus is now Hit-Girl’s replacement Dad, and the audience can tell he is doing everything for her own good, but little does she see it.  In the end, he is the one who has lost everything – his best friend, his “daughter”, and possibly his job (since Hit-Girl killed 6 people with his gun).  Yikes.  Also, from the first movie, we still have the death of Red Mist’s father to contend with, and of course he loses his newly found father figure as well, Javier.  Then Kick-Ass loses both the Colonel (his super-hero “father” type figure) and his real life dad.  So sheesh – if you’re a Dad in this movie, gtfo, because you’re going to die.  We could also mention the couple in the Justice Forever group, that have lost their son… but we won’t go there… even though there’s a dad there too that is loosing something…

I do find it interesting that Jim Carrey said he couldn’t support the violence in this movie, considering his characters back story in the movie as well.  He plays Colonel Stars and Stripes who is apparently an old mob-enforcer/hit man, and has now had a come-to-Jesus moment and is a born again Christian.  So, Jim Carrey played this violent character in a movie then had his come-to-Jesus moment and could no longer support the movie.  I just found those connections ironic.

 

Overall: 5.5/10

Unfortunately, the writers used some cheap jokes, like throw-up and poop, that are unnecessary and thus the movie loses a bit of respect.  Otherwise, outrageous, hilarious, “superheros” kicking ass with a mostly predictable plot that’s still a fun ride.
