Part 1 – Spoiler Free Quickie Review
Gru’s back, his minions are back, the girls are back, and this time we have a whole new enemy to deal with – boys. Margo is discovering boys!!! AH! There is also a super villain who is trying to destroy the world, but you know, the real issue here is the fact that Gru’s girls are growing up and he’s not sure if he’s ready. The movie is just as hilarious as the first movie, not as emotionally heart wrenching, but still adorable as can be. Everyone will enjoy this movie. Little kids, young “teenagers”, college age kids, and even parents. I saw this movie with my dad and we both thought it was hysterical.
The movie had a great mix of old characters we love (Dr. Nefario, is my favorite) and some new ones who are just as awesome. Lucy Wilde – Gru’s new partner, as assigned by the anti-villain league – fits her name very well. She is wild, crazy, but always funny. We also get Antonio, Margo’s crush. He’s the son of a handsome Mexican-food restaurant owner, Eduardo. Antonio’s character is the stereotypical Hispanic dream boat that you expect. And Eduardo, well, he is what happens when a Hispanic dreamboat then eats guacamole chip hats every day of your life (you get fat). Destiny, you know. The girls are as cute as ever – and Gru is still trying to do what ever he can to please them – even dressing up as a fairy princess to make Agnes’ birthday the perfect day. And of course – we can’t forget the ever hilarious minions. They do a minion-language version of YMCA that is amazing. We also get to see how they spend their down time – eating ice cream sundaes and partying all night, just like you’d expect.
My favorite parts of this movie, besides the minions of course, are when we get to see Gru act like super-dad. We have known since the first movie that he’s a good dad, but getting to see him act like a real parent in “normal” situations was pretty funny. The best parts deal with Margo and her crush on Antonio. He forgoes his save the world act a couple of times just to be able to check on them. As I mentioned before, there’s also the fairy princess scene. Then there’s also the girls as well as a pretty annoying neighbor deciding that it’s time Gru finds a wife. Those scenes are hilarious.
Make sure you stay for the first part of the credits, as you watch the minions being hilarious for a while. Also during the credits is pretty much the only scene I ever noticed the 3D in. One of the minions blows a bunch of bubbles and they come out of the screen. Pretty much every little kid in that movie theater said “WHOAAAAAA” at that part – and even my dad and I looked at each other and said that that was the best 3D part in the whole movie. Otherwise, the 3D didn’t add or take anything away. I’d say skip the 3D, because of how little it added.
Part 2 – In-Depth Spoiler Ridden Review
It’s obvious from the beginning who the bad guy is, I thought. The second we learn about El Macho – we know that Gru is going to be right and that yes, Eduardo = El Macho. But, again, we are grownups watching a child’s movie. There were things I wish we would have had a little more of – for example, young Gru. I LOVED the scenes in the first movie whenever we say little Gru trying to gain his dad’s approval. This time, we got a little bit of young Gru, when he was just a boy at school – but I wanted more! Alas, we didn’t get it. I also felt like some plot points were just kind of skimmed over or could have been made better. For example – what happened to the poor wig guy? I would have loved to see Ramsbottom’s reaction when Gru actually was right about Eduardo/El Macho. Watching him apologize to Gru would have been great.
I also kind of wanted Margo to get some sort of nice revenge on Antonio for being a dickwad. Like, he should have come out, revealed himself as a villain in training and tried to push the button – but have Margo shoot him with the freeze ray or something. I did love that the dang chicken at least hit the button. That was great.
Overall though, I was happy with the plot. It was still cute with some emotional moments, although nothing as heart wrenching as when in the first movie, Gru tells Margo he will never let her go no matter what. But still, watching Agnes say her little mothers day speech to Lucy on the wedding day, that was pretty dang adorable.
Overall: 7.5/10
See it with your whole family, everyone will have a good time watching the ever amazing Gru and family – minions included.
