Part 1 – Spoiler Free Quickie Review
I’m not really one for comedy movies, but this had great reviews, I like the actors, etc., so I decided to go ahead and see it – and boy am I glad that I did. This movie was hysterical. It was fun to have all the actors playing “themselves”. Seth Rogen said they all picked parts of their personalities and just exaggerated them. It was super fun and hilarious. A lot of the movie focuses around drug jokes and/or penis/sex jokes. There’s about a 5 minute scene with James Franco and Danny McBride talking about how they like to cum everywhere. Again, not typically my type of humor – but you throw these jokes into a hilarious parody type movie, with an apocalypse setting, and I’m down.
It seriously was hilarious – and the cameos in this movie are AMAZING. You get a hint at a couple, such as towards the beginning of the movie they mention that James Franco lives down the street from Channing Tatum – so you know you’ll see him at some point (and I won’t spoil where here, but I will in the second part of my review). The final cameo in the movie was the best as well – seriously, the entire theater was laughing hysterically out loud nonstop for the whole 2-3 minutes. Please try to see the movie without having that part spoiled, it was so great. Also – Michael Cera has one of the standout performances in this movie. He is one of the partygoers and oh dear god is he incredible. Every scene he is in, you’ll be laughing.
The movie also, surprisingly for a comedy, has an insanely well written plot. You aren’t ever really sure what is actually going on, and you know exactly what those in the house know. It’s kind of fun to figure out what is going on while they do. Then you also get to see how everyone reacts differently to the situation, like a real apocalypse movie. It has some scenes that are very reminiscent of other movies (on purpose), and then they even have a good time with their own movies – like Pineapple Express. The movie also has a great use of music. One of the songs towards the end will have you singing along and laughing hysterically at the same time. It’s awesome.
If you like post-apocalyptic movies, as well as some really dark raunchy comedy – go see this movie. You’ll definitely enjoy it.
Part 2 – In Depth Spoiler Ridden Review
In case you’re wondering what some of the best cameos were, then here you go.
Channing Tatum – he appears later in the movie than you would expect as Danny McBride’s gimp. Yes, his sex slave gimp. The best part, is that you don’t know it’s him at first. You just hear Danny McBride about how he does whatever he wants – like just sticking it in his gimp whenever he wants – and then the gimp shoves his naked butt up in the air. Only a minute later do you see that it is Channing Tatum. It was one of the best moments in the whole movie.
The other best cameo was at the very end, when Seth and Jay make it to Heaven. Craig tells them that they can have anything they want – so what does Jay wish for? But the Backstreet boys. At first, you just hear the music start, and you get excited, bu then you see Brian start to walk out – and you get all excited. Then all the Backstreet boys are there, and you are watching them, Seth Rogen, Craig Robinson, and a bunch of others do the dance to the song. It was an amazing end to the movie.
See it with a big group of friends, at a party, or in the theater, and just laugh your ass off at all the disgustingly dirty jokes and the surprisingly decent plot.
