Part 1 – Spoiler Free Quickie Review
Great, powerful movie. Does a very good job of showing exactly what the victim goes through, and the family after an ordeal like this. It’s a rough watch, not going to lie. Liana Liberato does an AMAZING job of playing the 13 year old girl who is raped. The emotion that girl is able to portray is incredible. From anger to crying scenes, holy crap she’s good.
This movie is hard to watch in that it involves a 13 year old girl getting tricked by an online predator. The movie shows why these online predators are often not caught – they’re smart, likeable people, and convincing. It also shows why the thoughts that the girl has as well – that it wasn’t a rape, that he loves her. So it does a very real storyline. It’s a good informative movie – but not just your everyday spur of the moment movie. You will get upset and you will want to go hunt some predators down.
I don’t even know how to review this movie. Cinematically, it’s boring, simple, with tons of well placed silent moments. The editing is done well. Nothing really blew me away though, movie wise other than the the great portrayal of the situation by the actors. But if you are in the mood for a life time type movie, with slightly less cheese, a little more realism, and better acting, go for it. I do wish Viola Davis’ character was used a bit more, just because she’s such a great actress, but ah well.
Part 2 – In Depth Spoiler Ridden Review/Synopsis
Here’s a decent synopsis on imdb.com – find it here.
Don’t expect a happy ending – you’re not going to get it. There’s not even a lovely bones type ending – so it’s not going to be satisfying. The movie ends with a scene of “Charlie” and his wife and son. And you hear that he’s a physics teacher. You could think to yourself that this must mean eventually he gets caught – if you want to look at it glass half full, but you just don’t know.
