Part 1 – Spoiler Free Quickie Review
So, obviously, when you see a new Resident Evil, you just think “oh geez, another one…” and you have to go see it. It sucks you in and you have to do it. You don’t care that it’s going to be the same as all the other ones, whatever. If you just take the movie for exactly what it is, nothing more, you WILL have a good time.
It’s a video game.. movie… a video game that they made into a movie. You’ve always known that in every single Resident Evil movie you’ve ever seen. To me, this movie felt 100% like a video game. My dad and I picked out the “levels”. You could clearly identify the “cut scenes” from the video games. The bosses were obvious. There was a nice amount of awesome zombie killing, and then a kick ass awesome end fight scene boss. The story line, was that of a video game expansion. So now that we’ve gotten that clear – accept the movie for what it is.
Milla Jovovich was awesome as the role of Alice, which she has always played. That’s not surprising. The other characters, either recurring or new, were all fun to watch. My favorite however, has always been and will always be Michelle Rodriguez as Rain. I love that character. She is so awesome. And in this movie, some of the characters also have clones – so they might have 2 or 3 different personas they are playing. So that’s pretty cool.
This one had some pretty awesome zombies. There was the big sledgehammer zombie from Resident Evil: Afterlife, there’s the normal crazy people type zombies, and then there are zombie nazi-looking things ala “Dead Snow“. They weren’t really Nazi’s, but they totally had the Nazi-zombie feel. And btw, if you haven’t seen “Dead Snow” you’re missing out. It’s zombie Nazis. How can that not be awesome?
So anyway – go see the movie. Expect nothing more than your typical Resident Evil movie and you’ll be entertained.
Part 2 – In Depth Spoiler Ridden Review/Synopsis
So a quick plot summary. Basically, Alice is being held and tortured in an underwater/ice facility. Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory) is being controlled by the Red Queen (the evil computer from like the first RE movie ever) and torturing Alice. Remember that Jill is Alice’s friend, when not being controlled by the Red Queen. Anyway, Wesker (Shawn Roberts), the previous head of Umbrella, sends in Ada Wong (Bingbing Li) to rescue Alice. They do and explain to Alice that they have a common enemy now – the Red Queen – who basically wants everyone everywhere to die (to contain the virus, which is what she was programmed for). Outside the facility, we see a few people coming to rescue Alice. One of them is Luther West (Boris Kodjoe), from the previous movie. So the underground area is laid out into sectors or “levels” as I’d like to call them. There is a Tokyo level, a NYC level, a Moscow level, and a Suburbia level (and I think one more I’m forgetting but we don’t go there so who cares). Suburbia is in the middle. Alice managed to cross Tokyo by herself – and now must cross NYC with Ada, meet up with the team in Suburbia (who must make it through Moscow) and then all head out. So we see them all go through their respective levels – at one point we get a little hearing impaired girl joining the group (I would have just left her, but I’m a bitch). This happens in Suburbia. We find out that the “levels” are really simulations. Alice, the little girl, Rain, and most everyone else we know were standard model clones. So this little girl is one of the clones that just happened to survive the last simulation. About that time – Jill and her team (including Rain) catch up to Alice and Ada and the girl. Alice and the girl escape, find a Rain-clone that’s nice, and go find the men in Moscow (who are fighting the zombie nazis). Eventually they all manage to almost get out, have some fights with Jill and her team, who use Ada as bait, most everyone dies, but Alice and the girl and a couple others make it out…. they blow up the underwater base….. start driving away…. and then omg Rain and Jill come out from under the ice and start attacking the people that are left ahhh oh no. Rain even injects herself with some strain of the virus that makes her awesome and powerful and able to kill people by slamming their chest, then like CSI we go inside them and see their heart stop. I find the immediate CSI extra to be the coolest part of her new skills. Alice ends up getting the spider thing off of Jill so she’s not controlled by the Red Queen, and they push zombie infected Rain down a hole into the ice/water… where all the zombies are now floating up. So they eat Rain. Sad day. Then Wesker’s chopper finally arrives to pick Alice and whoever else was still alive up, and we go to his base… the white house… which is now completely and uterlly 100% surrounded by zombies. So I guess we know what the next expansion pack….eeerrr… movie will be about!
The little girl thing I thought was stupid, but girl children annoy me so that might be part of it. Also noticed during the movie that Alice has mad skills in changing clothes super quickly. She went from naked to full rubber suit in like 5 seconds. That’s amazing right there (honestly, there was a countdown, going on so we know it was really like 5 seconds.).
It’s not a fabulous masterpiece but it’s highly entertaining. Zombie killings, awesome kills, crappy dialogue and minimal actual plot? That’s what I wanted and that’s what I got. So I can’t complain!
