Part 1 – Spoiler Free Quickie Review
Great movie, Tom Hardy as Bronson is amazing, definitely watch it. However, you’re expecting some normal type prison movie, that’s definitely not what you’re getting. You’re getting a theatrical presentation by Charles Bronson – who always wanted to be famous. Prison was his way of doing that. So go watch it, it’s awesome.
Part 2 – In Depth Spoiler Ridden Review
Before I begin, let me tell you why I wanted to watch this movie. I love Tom Hardy. Love. Love. Love. I also love his ability to change is body in a Christian Bale – type manner. Tom Hardy alternates between skinny Tom (Inception and Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy) to holy hell muscely Tom (Warrior, Bronson, the upcoming Dark Knight Rises). So, when I found out he’s naked in the movie, I didn’t care at all what it was about. I just wanted to watch it for that.
Holy mother of God was I in for a surprise. For anyone who hasn’t seen it, let me break it down for you. The story is told from Michael Peterson/Charlie Bronson (Tom Hardy)’s point of view. You’re seeing him from birth up until now. The shots alternate between him narrating over his life in jail, to the few times he got out, to scenes of him in the insane asylum, etc. with scenes of him on a stage performing in front of an audience. He always said what he wanted in life was to be famous. So, in a way, his “performances” in jail were his own type of art.
Tom Hardy was INCREDIBLE in this role (and not just because I got to see him naked!). This definitely solidified Hardy as a solid actor for years to come. Why? Bronson is insane. So totally insane. And yet, you kind of like him. You feel sorry for him when the girl he loves says she is marrying someone else. While you don’t approve of him stealing a ring from a jewelry store, you still feel sad when she turns him down. Tom Hardy also rocked the mustache. Just sayin’.
So what’s the plot you might ask? Michael Peterson, a young boy of 19 decides to rob a post office. He gets caught. He goes to jail. Now in jail is where his alter ego, Charles Bronson begins to come out. Bronson likes to wreck havoc on the prison system. Anything and everything he can do to cause trouble, he does it. At one point he causes a whole prison riot that caused hundreds of thousands of pounds in damage. Another point, he gets sent to an asylum for the criminally insane. We see what goes on there too. Now, I’ve heard people say that this movie “doesn’t have a plot” and I strongly disagree. The plot is watching Bronson develop. We see him go from the scared Michael Peterson into the bat-shit-crazy Bronson. And all the while, we still somehow love him.
If you’re going to watch the movie, you need to be prepared for that aspect of it. You should also be prepared for some visually stunning shots. And a whole lot of Tom Hardy’s dick. A lot of it. He loved to hold someone hostage, grease himself up, and basically be the greased pig in a sea of prison guards. I didn’t mind those scenes at all.
It is an incredible artistic movie. And Tom Hardy is naked. COME ON PEOPLE! And if you’re a guy, don’t worry, it’s hilarious to watch all the prison riots he causes and the dumb cops trying to catch him.
